One of the most popular among Sicilian artistic handicraft products is the Sicilian cart (in Sicilian “carrettu”).
Since seventeenth century it has been used as transportation means and it was used to carry goods.
Built with different wood types (ash, pine, walnut or beech), it is always decorated with fine carvings and painted decorations in traditional colours (red, green and blue). The traditional Sicilian cart decoration is rich and baroque, with flowers, leaves, embroidery and manifold geometries. The sides are beautifully decorated with traditional scenes, saints or Opera dei Pupi stories.
Nowadays there are very few craftsmen that keep this art alive. In the Madonie you can see unique works made by local artisans.
